The basics

What is data roaming?

Data roaming is when your phone uses mobile internet through a network that isn't your carrier's own — usually because you're in another country. Your carrier has agreements with networks abroad, so your phone can connect to them and keep working.

The Data Roaming switch in your phone's settings decides whether mobile data is allowed on those networks. Your carrier's plan and destination determine what it costs.

How it works

How data roaming works

Roaming connects your home carrier with networks in other countries, so your phone keeps working abroad. Here's what happens in three steps.

See what happens behind the scenes

  1. 1

    Your carrier partners abroad

Your SIM belongs to a carrier that runs its own network at home. It signs roaming agreements with networks in other countries so you can connect there.

  2. 2

Your phone joins a partner network

When you land, your phone connects to a local partner network. With Data Roaming switched on, mobile data works just like at home.

  3. 3

Usage is billed under your plan

Your carrier charges roaming according to your plan — it may be included, or charged per day or per MB. Check before you travel.

Costs

Data roaming costs

Depending on your carrier and plan, international roaming can result in additional charges. For some travelers it's included at no extra cost; for others it's charged per day or per megabyte.

Why roaming bills vary

  • CarrierEach carrier sets its own roaming prices and rules.
  • DestinationCountries are grouped into zones with different rates.
  • Mobile planSome plans include roaming; others don't.

  • Data usageMaps, video and background sync all add up.

Data roaming vs travel eSIM

Roaming uses your existing carrier. A travel eSIM adds a separate data plan. Which option is right for your trip depends on your carrier, destination, device and data needs.

Traditional roaming

Good fit if…

  • Your plan already includes roaming in your destination
  • You're taking a short trip with light data use
  • Your phone isn't eSIM-compatible or is carrier-locked

Data roaming basics

What roaming is, how it works and what your phone is telling you.

What is data roaming?

Data roaming is when your phone uses mobile internet through a network that isn't your carrier's own — usually because you're in another country. Read the complete data roaming guide.

Should data roaming be on or off?

Keep it off on any line where roaming isn't included or where you don't want roaming charges. Turn it on when roaming is included in your plan, or for a travel eSIM line that needs it to connect.

What happens when I turn off data roaming?

Your phone stops using mobile data on foreign networks. Wi-Fi still works, and calls and texts can usually still be used, though they may be charged. See how to turn off data roaming.

Can I still get calls and texts with data roaming off?

Usually yes. The Data Roaming switch only controls mobile data, so calls and SMS can still roam — and may be charged. To block all cellular use, turn on airplane mode and then switch Wi-Fi back on.

Costs & charges

What roaming can cost and how to stay in control.

Does data roaming cost money?

It can. Some plans include roaming in certain countries; others charge a daily fee or per megabyte. Costs depend on your carrier, plan and destination. Learn more about roaming charges.

Why was my roaming bill higher than expected?

The most common causes are pay-per-use pricing combined with background data — photo backups, app updates and video autoplay — or a daily pass being triggered on more days than expected. Usage alerts and Low Data Mode help prevent this.

Is roaming free in the EU?

For customers of EU/EEA operators traveling within the EU/EEA, "Roam Like at Home" rules generally mean no extra roaming charges, subject to fair use. Countries such as Switzerland and the UK aren't covered by these rules. See international data roaming.

How can I avoid international roaming charges?

Check your carrier's roaming terms, turn off data roaming where needed, use Wi-Fi for heavy use, reduce background data, and consider a travel eSIM or local SIM. Use our checklist.

Travel eSIMs

Using a separate data plan abroad.

Does an eSIM use data roaming?

Many travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, so the eSIM line is technically roaming. The data comes from the prepaid eSIM plan, not your home carrier. See eSIM roaming explained.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Look for an "Add eSIM" option in your phone's cellular or SIM settings, or an EID number in the About section. Your phone must also be unlocked from your carrier.

When should I install my travel eSIM?

Usually a day or two before you travel, on reliable Wi-Fi. Check whether the plan's validity starts when you install it or when it first connects abroad.

Will WhatsApp and other messaging apps still work?

Yes. Messaging apps linked to your phone number keep working when another line provides mobile data — you don't need to re-register. See eSIM vs roaming.
